Google Bulk-Added WhatsApp Numbers to Business Profiles: Check Yours Now
In the last week Google rolled out a bulk update that added WhatsApp contact buttons to a large number of Google Business Profiles. The problem: several of the auto-added numbers are wrong. Some belong to old listings, some to franchise locations in different cities, and some appear to have been guessed from the primary phone number. If you have not checked your listing this week, do it today. A wrong number here does more than annoy customers. It quietly undermines the NAP consistency signal Google uses to rank you.

What Actually Happened
Google has been pushing WhatsApp as a communication channel inside Business Profiles for the last 18 months, primarily in markets where WhatsApp is the dominant messaging app. The change this week extended the program to North America and Europe, but instead of opt-in, Google added buttons automatically based on phone numbers it already had on file. The verification step that normally checks whether a number is actively used on WhatsApp was either skipped or applied loosely, which is how incorrect numbers ended up live.
For a customer, this looks like a working button. They tap "Chat on WhatsApp," a conversation opens with someone (or no one), and the lead either goes to the wrong business or evaporates entirely. Neither outcome is good, and neither registers as a missed lead in your analytics.
Why This Hurts More Than You Think
Three problems compound:
- NAP drift. Google's local algorithm cross-references your phone number across directories, your website, and your GBP. A WhatsApp number that does not match your primary number creates a new inconsistency the algorithm has to reconcile. Our NAP consistency guide covers why this matters in detail.
- Lost leads with no paper trail. WhatsApp messages do not flow into your CRM by default. A customer who tries to message a wrong number and gives up never appears in any report. You only see the symptom: fewer calls, no obvious cause.
- Review risk. A customer who reaches the wrong business through your listing may leave a confused or angry review, damaging your star rating before you know what happened.
How to Check Your Profile in 60 Seconds
- Open Google Maps on your phone, search your business name, and tap the listing.
- Look for a "Chat" or WhatsApp icon next to the Call and Directions buttons.
- Tap it. WhatsApp will open with a conversation thread. Check the contact name and number at the top of the chat.
- If the number is yours and active on WhatsApp Business, you are fine. If it is wrong, missing, or belongs to someone else, move to the next section.
Do this from a phone, not a desktop. The WhatsApp button only renders on mobile, which is also where the majority of your local customers will encounter it.
How to Fix or Remove a Wrong Number
Google has not exposed a clean toggle for this yet. Three options depending on what you find:
- If the number is correct but you do not use WhatsApp, leave it alone or download WhatsApp Business and respond to the inbound messages. The button itself is a conversion asset.
- If the number is wrong, open your Business Profile Manager, go to Edit Profile, find the Contact section, and look for the messaging or WhatsApp field. Update or clear it. Changes typically take 24-48 hours to propagate.
- If the field is missing from your editor, the bulk update has not given you control yet. Submit a fix through Google's "Suggest an edit" link on the listing, or open a support case from the Business Profile dashboard. Reference the bulk WhatsApp rollout in your message.
While You Are In There, Audit the Rest of Your Contact Data
This is a good prompt to do a five-minute sweep:
- Primary phone number matches your website and your top 15 directories.
- Website URL is the canonical one (no tracking parameters, no http when you serve https).
- Hours include holiday hours for the next 90 days.
- Services list is complete and uses the same wording as your website.
- Owner-posted Q and A covers your top three customer questions.
Each of these is a ranking signal in its own right, and Google's AI systems (including the new Gemini connection to GBP) read them as a single trust score.
Watch For This Pattern Going Forward
The WhatsApp rollout is part of a wider trend: Google is making more changes to Business Profiles automatically, with less owner consent. Auto-generated descriptions, auto-suggested categories, and now auto-added contact channels are all examples. The defensive posture every local business should adopt is monthly profile review. Five minutes a month catches problems before they catch you.
